Kern County will use $1.6 million in federal funds and an insurance payout to replace two buses that were totaled in accidents.
The Kern Transit Division of the Public Works Department asked to use the unanticipated revenue for the mid-year purchase of the two buses, Director Joshua Champlin said in his request, which was attached to the draft minutes of the Kern County Board of Supervisors’ November 7 meeting.
According to Champlin, the Public Works Department has learned that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will provide funding to replace one bus. McLarens, the county’s insurer, will provide funds to replace a second bus.
“The TFA-funded bus is an 85% reimbursement from federal funds, with a 15% local match from Transportation Development Act funds. The insurance payout will cover the cost of the second bus, less a $100,000 deductible,” Champlin said in his motion, which was attached to the draft minutes of the Kern County Board’s 7 November meeting.
