As well as discussing the recent Hamas attack on Israel, lawmakers will also address hurricane recovery and resilience during a special legislative session in November.
Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis, says part of the focus will be on a programme to help property owners save money on insurance by strengthening their homes.
“I’d like to get rid of the backlog and if we’re able to add a little bit more to get us through the regular session,” Patronis said after Tuesday’s meeting of the Capitol Tiger Bay Club in Tallahassee.
“As long as we continue to have a healthy, robust bottom line of revenue in the state, I see the Legislature considering even making this a recurring program.”
The My Safe Florida Home programme was revived during last year’s special session. According to Patronis, the state has put more than $200 million into it to provide Florida homeowners with grants to buy stronger, wind-resistant windows and have their homes inspected in hopes of lowering insurance premiums.
Right now, there’s a waiting list for homeowners to get into the programme. That’s something the legislature is hoping to address. The special session is scheduled for 6-9 November.
