Prudential plc has announced the appointment of John Cai as the new Regional CEO for Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Agency, effective April 7. Cai will be based in Hong Kong and will report directly to Prudential’s CEO, Anil Wadhwani.
The move comes as Solmaz Altin, the current Regional CEO for Growth Markets, Health, and Agency, steps down to return to Europe for family reasons. Altin will remain with the company until the second half of 2025 as an advisor to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
Altin’s departure has prompted a restructuring of the Group Executive Committee, creating two new regional CEO positions within the company. Cai brings over 20 years of experience in the insurance sector, particularly in Asia. He previously served as Group Regional Chief Executive at AIA, overseeing operations in multiple countries including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Myanmar. Cai also led business and agency model transformations during his tenure. Prior to AIA, he was CEO of AXA Hong Kong.
Under the new structure, Cai will be responsible for Prudential’s operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, as well as the company’s agency strategy. A second regional CEO, focusing on India, Africa, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar with a specific emphasis on Health, will be announced in the near future.
In the meantime, Dennis Tan will continue in his role as Regional CEO for Singapore and Thailand, overseeing Partnership Distribution. Angel Ng remains the Regional CEO for Greater China, with responsibility for Customer and Wealth.
Prudential’s restructuring reflects its commitment to enhancing leadership capabilities and supporting growth across its key markets in Asia.
