The rapid expansion of Latin America’s travel insurance market is expected to lose some momentum next year, according to a new study by the Swiss Re Institute. After several years of strong demand, rising travel costs and economic uncertainty are likely to make travelers think twice before purchasing coverage.
The surge in travel insurance sales across the region followed the post-pandemic rebound in international trips. Many Latin American tourists, particularly those visiting the U.S. and Europe, prioritized insurance to protect against medical emergencies and trip disruptions. However, with airfares climbing and local currencies weakening against the dollar, some families may cut back on overseas vacations—and the insurance that goes with them.
Another factor is the growing popularity of domestic tourism. Countries like Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina are investing heavily in promoting local destinations, where travelers often feel less need for extensive insurance. Beach resorts, cultural hotspots, and nature retreats within the region are drawing more visitors, reducing reliance on international travel policies.
Despite the slowdown, experts emphasize that insurance remains crucial for anyone traveling abroad. A single medical emergency in a country with high healthcare costs can lead to massive bills, and coverage for trip cancellations or lost luggage can save travelers from major headaches. Insurers may need to adjust by offering more flexible plans or bundling policies with other travel services to keep customers interested.
For now, the outlook suggests steady but slower growth. While Latin Americans are still expected to buy travel insurance in 2025, the days of explosive post-pandemic growth appear to be over. The question is whether insurers can adapt quickly enough to keep the market moving forward.
