A significant number of young travelers in Hong Kong are unaware of the importance of travel insurance, despite their frequent travels, according to a recent survey by Blue Cross.
The study found that 68% of Hong Kong’s younger generation plans to travel at least twice a year, with 22% intending to make three or more trips annually. In addition, 58% of young travelers prefer spontaneous trips over meticulously planned itineraries, while 66% are influenced by the availability of cheap flights when planning their vacations.
While many seek adventure, with 74% looking for unique experiences and 32% drawn to off-the-beaten-path destinations, social media plays a significant role in their travel plans. Approximately 62% of young travelers are motivated by the desire to post travel experiences on social media.
However, the survey also highlighted concerning gaps in protection awareness. Despite their travel frequency, 34% of respondents indicated they would not consider purchasing travel insurance, and 42% deemed it unnecessary. This reveals a troubling lack of understanding of the potential risks involved in traveling without coverage.
Conversely, 66% of respondents stated they would buy insurance, with 80% citing attractive premiums and promotional offers as the deciding factors when choosing a policy.
Other travel-related concerns also emerged, with 71% of respondents expressing worry about flight delays or cancellations and 50% concerned about lost or damaged luggage.
Bonnie Tse, CEO of Blue Cross, emphasized the importance of comprehensive travel insurance. “In addition to addressing common travel disruptions like flight delays and lost luggage, a well-rounded policy offers crucial protection against accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can occur during travel,” Tse explained.
