Agent Defends RM30 Premium Hike Amid Backlash

by Celia

As Malaysians brace for significant hikes in medical insurance premiums ranging from 40% to 70% in 2025, one insurance agent has stepped forward to justify the increase. However, his defense has sparked mixed reactions online.

Many policyholders have voiced their concerns, with some already noticing a surge in their monthly premiums. Despite the frustration, the insurance agent argues that the RM30 increase is a minor adjustment when compared to the potentially massive medical bills policyholders could face without coverage.

The agent shared a recent case involving a client who was hospitalized following a motorcycle accident, resulting in a staggering RM70,000 hospital bill. He highlighted this as a clear example of the true value of medical insurance.

“Consider this: If your premium increases by RM30, just pay it. RM30 is a small amount compared to paying RM70,000 out of pocket at the hospital. Got it? Share this with your friends and family,” the agent wrote on his Instagram Threads account.

While some found the agent’s message valid, the price hike has fueled a heated debate among netizens. Several online users expressed dissatisfaction, accusing insurance agents of failing to disclose price increases when selling policies.

One user, flyingpeacefully, criticized the agent, saying, “This is the dumbest agent I’ve ever encountered. Medical costs have gone up, and yet you still want to charge clients more. If a client has never made a claim, you don’t lower their premiums or anything. Before posting this to clients, ask your insurance company whether they’re making a profit or loss every year. Don’t say clients can’t argue about this—we’re the ones paying your commissions.”

Another user, Hakkimjohari93, expressed frustration with the lack of transparency, writing, “The agent promised no increase, then said it would only go up a little. No wonder clients are complaining. At least give them a heads-up if premiums are going to rise by such a large amount. If you’re promoting something, be upfront about the price hike.”

As the conversation continues online, many remain skeptical about the increasing premiums, urging insurance agents and companies to offer clearer explanations and more honest communication.
