Business leaders in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region are facing a complex web of challenges. According to the Executive Opinion Survey jointly conducted by the World Economic Forum, Marsh McLennan, and Zurich Insurance Group, economic uncertainty, climate risks, and labour shortages top the list of concerns for the next two years. Sid Medappa, the Chief Risk Officer for APAC at Zurich Insurance Group, has underlined the significance of a proactive and integrated risk management strategy to combat these intertwined issues. He noted that as businesses approach 2025, building resilience will be crucial in dealing with economic instability, climate hazards, and workforce scarcities.
In Eastern Asia, a notable shift has occurred where labour and talent shortages have surpassed economic apprehensions. This signals the mounting difficulties in maintaining a proficient workforce, especially in the IT and digital arenas. Simultaneously, climate-related risks are escalating across APAC. Extreme weather phenomena such as floods and heatwaves are presenting substantial threats, particularly in Oceania and Eastern Asia. The rising frequency and severity of these events emphasize the necessity for businesses to allocate resources towards climate adaptation and mitigation measures to safeguard their operations and assets.
Furthermore, inflation remains a heavy burden for enterprises in Oceania and Southeastern Asia, inflating costs and constricting consumer expenditure. Socioeconomic disparities, like poverty and income inequality in Southern and Southeastern Asia, further muddle the risk panorama. Geoeconomic tensions, especially in Eastern Asia, are also exacerbating the situation. Trade disruptions, sanctions, and investment limitations are impeding supply chains and economic steadiness. The survey, which incorporated perspectives from over 11,000 business leaders across 121 countries, reveals that the ongoing economic slump, characterized by recessions and stagnation, is the main worry for most sub-regions including Oceania, Southeastern Asia, and Southern Asia.
