The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has declared a significant new mandate. Manpower agencies sending Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to Bahrain must now make an additional deposit of $398 (BHD 150) as insurance for each work permit they issue, on top of the standard work permit fee. This insurance is crucial as it will be used to cover the costs of repatriating OFWs in the event of employment termination.
Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory Authority has specified that this policy is only applicable to licensed manpower agencies that supply temporary workers under various contract durations, be it hourly, daily, monthly, or yearly. It’s an important clarification that narrows down the scope of those affected.
The DMW has also informed that the regulation will come into effect after its publication in Bahrain’s official gazette. This gives the agencies and other stakeholders a timeline to prepare and adjust their operations accordingly, ensuring a smoother transition to this new requirement and safeguarding the interests of OFWs in the process.
