On November 11, with the passing of the MediShield Life (Amendment) Bill, Singapore is set to expand the MediShield Life coverage. This significant move will cover mental health services, outpatient and home care. Premium subsidies for the elderly and lower – income groups will also be enhanced.
The expansion includes covering repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression and raising the psychiatric ward limits in MediShield Life by around 40% (from $160 to $230 per day). A new $500 outpatient deductible will be introduced, and MediSave withdrawal limits will be increased. For those with financial hardships, there are options like MediFund. The MediShield Life premium will increase by up to 35% in three years, averaging a 22% increase per policyholder by 2028. Subsidies for lower – to middle – income older Singaporeans will rise to 60% from 50%. Additionally, seniors with lower MediSave balances will get more top – ups.
The government will provide various MediSave top – ups for different groups. Those in need of extra premium support after subsidies and top – ups can apply for Additional Premium Support. Minister of State Rahayu Mahzam said premiums will rise, but support has been provided to offset increases for most Singaporeans, and the government will keep reviewing the scheme to ensure affordability.
