In a development that has sent shockwaves through the insurance industry and beyond, Landmark Admin, a Texas-based company known for providing third-party administrative solutions to life insurance carriers, filed a notice of data breach last week. The discovery follows the detection of suspicious activities on its system back in May.
This breach has exposed the sensitive information of approximately 800,000 users. According to a filing with the Attorney General of Maine, an unauthorized party managed to access a wide range of personal data. This includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, drivers’ license numbers, state identification card numbers, passport numbers, bank account and routing numbers, medical information, health insurance policy numbers, dates of birth, and life and annuity policy information. Such a comprehensive exposure of personal data poses a significant threat to the privacy and financial security of those affected.
Landmark’s response was swift. On learning of the data breach on May 14, just one day after detecting the suspicious activity, the company took immediate action. It disconnected indicated systems and remote access to the network to prevent further unauthorized access. Additionally, Landmark promptly engaged a specialized third-party cybersecurity firm and its own IT personnel to assist in securing the environment. In its filing, Landmark also revealed that the incident affected information from individuals associated with Liberty Bankers Insurance Group and its subsidiaries, including American Monumental Life Insurance Company, Pellerin Life Insurance Company, American Benefit Life Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company, and Capitol Life Insurance Company. As the situation unfolds, affected individuals are left wondering about the potential consequences and what steps they can take to protect themselves. A notice of the data breach can be found here, providing some measure of transparency in this troubling event.
