A car insurance company has announced it would “proactively reduce policy prices” if a nationwide 20 mph speed limit were implemented across the UK.
The firm estimates that the average driver could save around £50 per year on their car insurance if this controversial policy were adopted more widely.
Earlier this year, the Welsh Government introduced a 20 mph speed limit in built-up areas, which has reportedly resulted in a 20% reduction in car accidents.
Despite this, the new speed limit faced significant opposition in Wales, leading to a record-breaking petition with over 500,000 signatures submitted to the Senedd.
According to Sky News, the Welsh Government has since revised its guidance, allowing certain roads to be exempt from the new restrictions. This adjustment is part of a broader effort to ensure “the right speed on the right road.”
Elsewhere in the UK, the idea is gaining traction. Glasgow City Council has announced plans to lower speed limits to 20 mph on approximately 4,000 roads throughout the city.
Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has stated that speed limit decisions would be “entirely up to local areas” if implemented across England.
Several regions in England have already adjusted their default speed limits on local roads, with cities like London, Norwich, and Chichester leading the way. Other areas, including Manchester, are also contemplating lowering the default speed limit on local roads.
