In response to escalating cyber incidents, Hong Kong is urged to bolster its cybersecurity measures, with QBE highlighting the critical need for robust cyber coverage. Last year, the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre reported a staggering 7,752 security incidents, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. Phishing attacks alone accounted for nearly half of these cases, reflecting a 27% surge from the previous year.
The impact of these incidents has been felt across various sectors. The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) recently faced a disruptive cyberattack, prompting the activation of emergency protocols and engagement of cybersecurity experts for recovery efforts. While no data breaches were detected, the incident underscores vulnerabilities in organizational defenses.
Similarly, the Companies Registry disclosed a significant data breach affecting 110,000 individuals, exposing sensitive personal details such as names, contact information, and identification numbers. In a separate incident, the Fire Services Department reported unauthorized access to personal information of over 5,000 residents and staff, linked to incidents during Super Typhoon Saola in 2023. Measures are being strengthened to prevent future breaches.
To mitigate these risks, QBE advises implementing robust cyber hygiene practices:
1. Update Your Software: Regularly update software and enable automatic updates where possible to mitigate vulnerabilities.
2. Use Strong Passwords: Employ unique, complex passwords and consider utilizing a password manager for enhanced security.
3. Turn on Multifactor Authentication: Implement multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of protection to accounts.
4. Think Before You Click: Exercise caution when dealing with suspicious links or attachments from unknown sources to avoid phishing attempts.
5. Educate Your Staff: Ensure all team members are trained in cybersecurity best practices and receive regular updates on emerging threats.
