As millions of Australians prepare for July school holidays in warmer climates, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) is stressing the importance of securing travel insurance, particularly in light of increasing incidents involving alcohol consumption.
According to recent data, approximately 87% of Australians opted for travel insurance during their last overseas trip in the past year. Highlighting the risks associated with alcohol consumption abroad, ICA CEO Andrew Hall emphasized the need for travelers to fully understand their coverage to avoid unexpected financial burdens.
“While enjoying a drink or two is a common part of vacationing for many Australians, it’s crucial that travelers are aware of their insurance coverage. Understanding policy details can prevent situations where a simple injury turns into a costly ordeal,” Hall stated in a press release.
Travel insurance policies typically provide protection against unforeseen accidents, damages, or losses, with specific provisions regarding incidents involving alcohol. Many policies include exclusions related to accidents occurring under the influence, often setting limits aligned with legal blood alcohol levels, such as up to 0.19%.
A survey conducted by Quantum Market Research on behalf of the ICA and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller revealed insightful statistics about Australians’ insurance habits. Of those surveyed who traveled overseas in the past year, 69% reported consuming alcohol during their trip. However, awareness about insurers’ alcohol consumption policies varied, with 40% acknowledging differences between providers and over half uncertain about their policy’s stance on alcohol-related incidents.
Despite the risks, 13% of Australians traveled uninsured on their last trip, with younger individuals, low-income households, and culturally diverse communities more likely to forego insurance coverage.
The ICA continues to advocate for travelers to review and understand their insurance policies thoroughly before embarking on international journeys, ensuring comprehensive protection against potential mishaps, including those related to alcohol consumption.
