Bupa Launches $180M Cancer Care Support Service Amid Rising Diagnoses
Bupa has unveiled its new “Cancer Care” support system in response to the alarming rate of cancer diagnoses in Hong Kong, where an average of 100 new cases are identified daily. Over the past five years, cancer has accounted for one in ten health insurance claims, prompting Bupa to pay out $180 million (HK$1.4 billion) to more than 31,000 claimants.
The “Cancer Care” initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for patients from the moment of diagnosis through to treatment and follow-up. This service is designed to offer consistent guidance and assistance at every stage of the cancer journey.
“Patients who receive a positive cancer diagnosis often face uncertainty and profound concern about their next steps,” said Fiona Harris, Managing Director of Bupa in Hong Kong, in a press release. “Unfortunately, many patients lack a central source of information and support.”
Harris highlighted the complexity of cancer treatment, which typically involves a multi-disciplinary approach and continuous evolution of care. “Each stage may introduce new doctors and additional information that patients need to understand. ‘Cancer Care’ is designed to support patients throughout their journey, alleviating anxiety, clarifying information, and preventing delays in potentially life-saving treatments,” she added.
The key features of the “Cancer Care” service include:
- A dedicated nurse hotline to address patient questions and coordinate next steps
- Tailored treatment plans developed by oncologists and specialists
- Fast-tracked appointments
- Allied health and post-treatment support
- Proactive check-ins to ensure ongoing patient care
This service is available to all Bupa customers, including both individual and corporate clients.
