Majority of Homeowners in Florida and California Face Escalating Insurance Costs, Survey Reveals

by Celia

A recent survey conducted by Redfin, a prominent U.S. real estate broker, sheds light on the prevailing challenges faced by homeowners in Florida and California, as they grapple with soaring property insurance expenses.

The findings of the survey underscore a significant trend, with over 70% of respondents from Florida indicating that they, or their communities, have experienced a notable surge in insurance costs or alterations in coverage. Alarmingly, 12% of Florida homeowners surveyed reported being dropped by their insurers, with an equal percentage attributing their intent to relocate to other areas to the dual factors of escalating premiums and the increasing frequency of natural disasters.

In California, a majority of 51% of participants disclosed encountering heightened premiums or diminished coverage for their residential properties or those in their vicinity, as highlighted in the Redfin report. Furthermore, 13% of Californian respondents planning to move cited concerns regarding natural disasters and climate-related risks as decisive factors.

These figures significantly surpass the national averages, as underscored by Redfin.

The report also illuminates a striking revelation: merely one-third of homeowners across the United States possess a comprehensive understanding of the natural disasters covered by their insurance policies. Concurrently, an equivalent percentage of U.S. real estate agents—34%—acknowledge grappling with an uptick in issues associated with home insurance over the past year. This concern is particularly pronounced in Florida, where a staggering 73% of agents reported facing such challenges, followed closely by California at 64%.

The survey findings signal a pressing need for heightened awareness and proactive measures among homeowners, insurers, and policymakers alike, to address the burgeoning crisis of escalating insurance costs and coverage limitations, exacerbated by the specter of climate change and increasingly frequent natural disasters.
