Residents in Washington County are facing a concerning development as some are finding themselves without homeowners insurance due to issues stemming from the local fire department’s data management.
As of Thursday, the Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department has been designated as the primary fire department in Union Township, Washington County, replacing the Elrama Volunteer Fire Department. This decision comes amidst a pressing situation affecting homeowners in the area.
Board Chair Michalle Dupree described the move as a “desperate attempt” to address the emergency situation unfolding within the township, though she emphasized that it serves as a temporary solution.
The root of the problem lies in a recent assessment conducted by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) regarding the Elrama Volunteer Fire Department. ISO rates fire departments based on their fire suppression capabilities, which insurance companies use to determine homeowners insurance rates. However, emails dating back to 2020 reveal that ISO attempted to contact the Elrama Fire Department for data collection purposes but received no response.
Chief Lenny Bailey expressed surprise at the situation, stating that he was never contacted by ISO. The lack of communication resulted in Elrama Fire receiving a poor ISO score of 10, compared to their previous rating of six.
According to Dupree, the low score was exacerbated by a lack of fire hydrant testing data, attributed to unpaid hydrant bills by the township, and unresolved worker’s compensation insurance issues.
However, efforts are underway to rectify the situation. Dupree mentioned that the township has resolved these issues, and they anticipate improvements in Elrama’s ISO rating. Chief Bailey is scheduled to meet with an ISO representative on March 6 to initiate the process of improving the department’s rating. Though it may take up to six months, township and fire department officials are committed to expediting the process for the benefit of the community.
