A new free legal service has commenced operations in Tararua REAP’s “Bluey” building, aimed at addressing the legal needs of residents in the region spanning from Norsewood to Dannevirke and Woodville.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Manawatu Community Law Centre based in Palmerston North, comes in response to an observed uptick in demand for legal assistance within the Tararua District.
According to Manager Andrew Crellen, the pilot scheme aims to cater to the diverse legal concerns of residents, covering areas such as employment, family matters including power of attorney and wills, consumer affairs encompassing guarantees and traffic fines, among others.
The service, stationed in the Tararua REAP Bluey building on Gordon St, Dannevirke, will operate from Tuesday to Thursday and every second Friday, offering assistance from 9 am to 4 pm. No prior appointment is necessary, and the service is provided free of charge.
Leading the local office is case manager Maria Rahui, equipped with a law degree and three years of immersion within the Tararua District community, particularly engaging with the relatives of Rangitane, which has fostered a sense of warmth and familiarity.
Andrew Crellen, with nearly two decades of experience managing the Dannevirke District Court, emphasized the service’s commitment to conducting educational sessions alongside providing legal counsel, aimed at empowering the community with knowledge and resources to navigate legal challenges effectively.
Elaine Reilly, the General Manager of Tararua REAP, underscored the vital role of the law center in the community, highlighting the importance of seeking legal advice proactively to preempt potential issues.
The initiative comes at a critical juncture as residents grapple with legal complexities exacerbated by various factors, including changes in legislation, economic dynamics, and societal shifts.
Tararua Community Law aims to bridge the gap in access to legal resources, ensuring that residents receive equitable support irrespective of their socioeconomic status or geographical location.
As the service embarks on its journey, it aspires to collaborate with stakeholders and organizations to broaden its impact and enhance community resilience against legal challenges.
