A Charlotte woman faces charges of insurance fraud, as announced by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Thursday.
Laverne Love Johnson Peebles, aged 36, has been charged with one count of insurance fraud by special agents from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division. The accusation stems from Peebles allegedly filing a fraudulent claim with Sentry Insurance Company, claiming she was driving her Toyota Sequoia SUV with a passenger when the vehicle was involved in a crash on May 29, 2023. However, investigations revealed that Peebles was not present in the car at the time of the incident.
Peebles has been summoned to appear in a Mecklenburg County courtroom on February 29 to address the charge against her.
Commissioner Causey emphasized the impact of insurance fraud on consumers, stating, “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”
Individuals who suspect instances of insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes are encouraged to report anonymously by contacting the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division, either directly or through the toll-free number accessible from anywhere in North Carolina.
