In response to the recent announcement of a potential strike by EVA Air pilots during the upcoming Lunar New Year, Lee Chi-yuen, spokesperson for the Taipei-based Travel Quality Assurance Association, has urged the public to consider purchasing travel insurance. The strike, if it occurs, is anticipated to provide only a 24-hour notice.
Lee emphasized that standard contract liability insurance for group tours does not encompass disruptions caused by airline strikes. In such instances, travel agencies are mandated to provide accommodation and meals for affected passengers, who can subsequently seek reimbursement directly from the airline.
Referring to a Taiwan News report, Lee cited the previous China Airlines pilot strike as a precedent, where impacted travelers received a maximum compensation of US$250 per person per day.
Given the traditionally heightened costs associated with ticket alterations and rebookings during the Lunar New Year period, Lee underscored the importance of obtaining travel insurance. He advised tourists to promptly secure such insurance and carefully verify the specific coverage in case of a strike.
In addition to encouraging individual responsibility, Lee called for travel agencies to adopt a uniform approach in handling scenarios involving pilot strikes. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications would provide guidance to ensure that travel agencies are adequately prepared for any disruptions that may arise.
Highlighting a potential challenge during strikes, Lee noted that while airlines typically waive handling fees for ticket changes or cancellations, travelers may still face difficulties. The surge in demand for seats during the Lunar New Year could limit alternative travel arrangements, emphasizing the potential impact of the strike on holiday plans. As uncertainties loom over the travel landscape, the call for proactive measures, including the acquisition of travel insurance, aims to mitigate potential inconveniences for those planning to travel during this festive period.
