RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia’s insurance marketplace is reminding residents that coverage under the new insurance marketplace will begin in early 2024, and this Friday, December 15, is the last day to apply for coverage.
Open enrollment for Virginia’s new Insurance Marketplace began on 1 November, replacing access to health coverage through HealthCare.gov for all Virginians. It provides resources to help residents find affordable health coverage that meets their needs. Every health plan offered on the Marketplace covers the 10 essential health benefits required by law, including doctor visits, hospitalization and prescription drugs.
According to the Office of the State Corporation Commission (SCC), any health care coverage secured after December 15 and before open enrollment ends on January 15 will begin on February 1. After open enrollment ends, Virginians who experience what’s called a qualifying life event, such as having a baby or losing health coverage, may be eligible to enroll during a special enrollment period.
The Marketplace is also the only place where Virginians can apply for financial assistance to help lower their monthly insurance costs. The SCC reminds Virginians who no longer qualify for Medicaid due to changes in their income may also qualify for significant savings in the Marketplace.
